Talking Computers

In summer 2007, the SSVCA in Yeovil was awarded funds by the Big Lottery to run the “Talking Computers: IT Freedom for All” project. This project is now underway at the IT Resource Centre on Houndstone Business Park in Yeovil and at Somerset Sight in Taunton and it is not just about computers that talk, though we do have these!

People who have visual impairment, physical disabilities or dyslexia are being referred by our key partner agencies for advice and training in the use of ‘assistive technology’.  This technology includes devices such as adapted keyboards and mice and specialist software such as Guide, JAWS and Dragon, also minor adaptations available through standard Windows software or minor modifications to keyboards such as high-visibility stick-on letters.

Learner with Guide Standard computers tend to consist of a processing unit, a screen, a keyboard and a mouse.  Many people have difficulty using one or more of these components even if they do not have a disability or a learning difficulty such as dyslexia but if they do have a disability or dyslexia the standard computer can present many obstacles to its effective use.  Our project aims to help people to overcome these obstacles so that they can experience the same opportunities that computers offer as anyone else does – and feel confident in doing so.
